“Behind every successful man is a woman,” goes the famous saying. But behind every successful alumnus of PSBB, there was Mrs YGP – also known as Rajalakshmi Parthasarathy. Mrs YGP shaped every bright young mind that graced the halls of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, producing many success stories in the process.
The Humble Origins of PSBB
A decade after Independence, barely any effort had been made to change the highly anglicized educational system in India. The enterprising housewives of the Nungambakkam Ladies Recreation Club, led by Mrs YGP, took it upon themselves to create a ‘more Indian’ alternative. They wanted a system that could teach contemporary values while also preserving Indian heritage and tradition, in the form of Sanskrit shlokas, music, dance, and yoga. They wanted to teach their students to say “Sri Gurubhyo Namaha,” rather than the standard “good morning” that the other schools taught.
And thus, in 1958, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) School was born. The school began with just 13 students from the neighbourhood, on the terrace of Mrs YGP’s Nungambakkam home. Things just snowballed from there: in just a year, the brand new PSBB School had its own building. By 1971, it had opened its first official branch in Nungambakkam, with Mrs YGP as Dean & Director of the School. She continued to hold this post right until her passing in 2019, at the ripe old age of 93.
In her 50+ years as an educator, Mrs YGP helped PSBB distinguish itself as one of the best schools in Chennai and beyond, with some even recognizing it amongst the foremost educational institutions in India. She was also a key contributor to the new CBSE schooling system and was honoured in 2010 with a Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour. She was also a recipient of the Vayoshreshtha Samman Award from the Government of India.
Mrs YGP has also been recognized and praised for her work by many eminent personalities, including APJ Abdul Kalam, Pranab Mukharjee, Prathiba Patil, MGR, K Kamaraj, M Karunanidhi, J Jayalalithaa, Kiran Bedi, Nirmala Sitharaman, Sachin Tendulkar, A R Rahman, Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Anirudh Ravichander, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, and Pandit Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Sri Gurubhyo Namaha, indeed!
Just a few of the glowing PSBB alumni include:-
- Sundar Pichai
- A R Rahman
- Ravichandran Ashwin
- Anirudh Ravichander
And these are just a few of the many big names that once walked the halls of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan. Today, PSBB’s chain of schools boasts 10,000+ students, with branches in Nungambakkam, T Nagar, K K Nagar, Siruseri, Porur, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, and Cuddalore. One of these new additions to the PSBB family stands on the lush green campus of our very own Pragnya Eden Park.
PSBB Siruseri at Pragnya Eden Park
The Siruseri branch of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan was inaugurated in 2011 as part of PSBB’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations by none other than Mrs YGP herself, with an initial strength of just 170 students. Our team at Eden Park contributed heavily to the construction of the school. With large, well-ventilated classrooms, a well-furnished library, state-of-the-art labs and infrastructure, a large playground, and well-trained and experienced staff, it truly lives up to the PSBB legacy.
Carrying forward the same strong founding principles of Mrs YGP, our school instils the same Indian traditions and values in its students. We celebrate all festivals and national events with unbridled enthusiasm. Our students learn Sanskrit, classical music, classical dance, yoga, and other aspects of Indian culture in addition to the conventional syllabus. Sports is also heavily encouraged, with the school boasting a 6,000 sq ft playground.
The school is co-ed from Pre-KG to 12th, with Biology, Computer Science, and Commerce streams available to Grades 11 and 12. Located within our very own Eden Park Township, PSBB Siruseri is just a short walk away for our residents, who enjoy preference for admissions.
PSBB has a long history of providing its students with a holistic education, and we are all set to carry that legacy forward for your children at PSBB Siruseri. Indeed, nothing is as priceless as giving our children the best shot at life – and that begins with the right schooling. So where better to send your child, than to one of Chennai’s finest schools?
